About us
The Beginning
It was a mild spring day on the Long Island Sound in Connecticut, USA, when Juan (from Gijón, Spain) and Mark (from Rotterdam, The Netherlands) first met while out with their kids in the same coastal town. A strong friendship quickly formed over a shared love of drinks, books, movies — and most of all, music.
Mark had been collecting records since the age of eight, steadily expanding both his collection and his Hi-Fi system over the years. In Connecticut, he began hosting a monthly gathering in his basement, inviting Juan and other fellow collectors to bring a few records based on a chosen theme. These nights became a place to share music — often new and surprising — and to deepen their appreciation for the art of listening.
Fast forward to 2025, when Mark and his family moved to Gijón. One evening, after attending a jazz concert on Calle San Agustín, he noticed a vacant old record store for rent. He shared the idea with Juan, and the decision came naturally: breathe new life into the space and open Session Records on October 30, 2025.

The Name
When trying to come up with a name we wanted something that was connected to music, and the city. After some reading on the history of Gijón/Xixón a theory exists that the name of the city might come from the hypothetical Roman actual name of the place "Sessio" which may have turned into the word "Xixón" as the centuries went by. Which seems to be the most accepted theory now. That directed us to the word 'session'. Juan and other friends would sit down and dedicate time together to listen to music; a listening session. In that sense 'session' means time dedicated to a single thing. Whether that is jamming, recording, surfing or listening to music which makes Session Records. A place where music is heard, shared, and appreciated.
Session Records isn’t just a shop.
It’s a place for music lovers — built from friendship, community, and the shared joy of discovering a great record.
